Nexus S: manual update to Android 4.0, root and recovery on Ice Cream Sandwich [Tutorial]

Google has released a few days ago to upgrade to for Android 4.0.3 Nexus S , the second generation Google Nexus. The update was released via OTA , but probably not all have received the update notification: however you can force the update, manually installing the package containing the update to Android 4.0.3. This procedure is valid only for those who have a Nexus S "original", ie without root permissions, and Custom ROM.

Install Android 4.0.3
  1. Download the zip package Official -> LINK
  2. Rename it to update.zip and copy it into the Nexus S
  3. Restart the phone in bootloader mode: when you switch off, turn it on again by pressing the Volume Up
  4. Then select Recovery, pressing the power button
  5. Once appeared in a red triangle, hold down the Power button, and press the Volume Up
  6. Then select the item  apply updates from / sdcard and then update.zip
  7. Once completed click on reboot system, and you're done!
This procedure is very similar to that performed for Android 2.3 Gingerbread, therefore, requires unlocking the bootloader, the installation of ClockworkMod Recovery, and the next flash of the package useful for obtaining root privileges. However, it must be present on your PC / Laptop Android SDK, and USB drivers working.
Unlocking the Bootloader
Just restart the Nexus S in bootloader mode / fastboot ( Volume Up + Power Button ), and a terminal, type
fastboot oem unlock
Installing Recovery Clockwork + ROOT

    File root.zip -----------> LINKS
  2. Copy the recovery in the format. Img SDK tools folder and file in the memory of the Nexus S root.zip
  3. From the terminal, enter the directory in SDK / tools and the command you
    fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-
  4. Then restart the Nexus mode Recovery (as before, the voice Recovery with press the Power button once booted into bootloader)
  5. Then select the items in sequence:
    • Install From Zip SDCard
    • Toggle Signature Verification -> Disabled
    • Choose Zip from SDCard and select the file root.zip
  6. Then restart the Nexus S, and download the application from the Android Market SuperUser
  7. Access to program settings, and select the  track of 3.xxx - Tap to check for updates.
